Taking the subway in New York is perhaps the most popular form of transportation in the city, aside from walking. The subway system is open 24 hours a day and is very safe as long as you remember to use common sense if you’re traveling by yourself at night.

During rush hour periods, a new train arrives every 2-5 minutes. During the daytime in non-rush hour periods you can expect a train ever 5-15 minutes and from 12am to 5am, a new train comes every 20 minutes.

For a single ride, it’s $2.25 or $2.50 depending on the type of ride you purchase. If you’re going to be in the city for a while, you can purchase a 1 week unlimited ride pass for $29 or a 1 month pass for $104. Metro cards can be purchased at any subways station. You can pay with cash or credit/debit card.

Navigating the subway in New York may seem daunting at first, considering the sheer size of the system, but if you get yourself a good map and make sure to map out your route before hand, you’ll get to your destination with no problem.
